What image sizes do social platforms use?
Each platform publishes its own sizes and changes them often. Start from a large original, keep key content in the center, and check the platform's current help page.
Social platforms crop and resize images to fit their own layouts, and they change those layouts often. Instead of memorizing pixel sizes, start from a large original, design for the shape you need, and keep anything important away from the edges.
The three shapes that cover most posts
- Square (1:1). Works almost everywhere: feeds, profile pictures, Google Business Profile.
- Tall (portrait, such as 4:5 or 9:16). Takes up more of a phone screen. Stories and short videos use 9:16.
- Wide (landscape, such as 16:9 or about 1.91:1). Used for link previews, cover photos and some ads.
One size we can confirm
Google Business Profile photos must be JPG or PNG, between 10 KB and 5 MB, at least 250 by 250 pixels, and Google recommends 720 by 720 pixels. Google also asks that photos be in focus, well lit and free of heavy filters.
Tips that hold for every platform
- Start from a large original file, not a screenshot or a photo saved from another app.
- Keep text, faces and logos in the center so cropping does not cut them off.
- Profile pictures often display as a circle. Keep your logo inside the middle of the square.
- Check each platform's own help center for current sizes before you design a cover photo or ad.

Common problems
- If your cover photo is cut off on phones, move the important part toward the center.
- If text in an image is hard to read on a phone, use fewer words in larger type.
- If a post looks blurry, upload a larger original instead of a screenshot.
