Can I do SEO without a website?
Partly. A Google Business Profile and listings can get you found locally, but a website gives you much more to rank with and full control.
You can get found without a website, mainly through a Google Business Profile. Google does not require a website for a Business Profile, as long as you give a phone number or website that reaches your business. But a profile alone gives search engines and customers much less to go on, and you depend entirely on platforms you do not control.
What works without a website
- Google Business Profile. This is how you appear on Google Maps and in local results. Reviews, photos, posts and accurate hours all help.
- Other map and directory listings, such as Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and your industry's main directories.
- Social media Pages, which can show up when people search your business name.
What a website adds
- Pages for each service, so you can show up for many different searches, not only your name and main category.
- Room to answer questions and show your work in detail.
- Prominence. Google's local ranking considers how well known you are, including links to your business. A website gives other sites something to link to.
- AI search sources. Google says its AI features draw on indexed pages. A website gives those tools facts in your own words.
- Control. A platform can change its rules or suspend a listing. Your own site and domain stay yours.
Common problems
- If your Business Profile has no website, add your best social page or booking page until you have a site.
- If you plan to build a site later, register your domain now in the business's name, so you own it from day one.
