What is SEO, in plain words?

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of helping search engines understand your website and helping people find it in regular, unpaid search results.

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Google describes it as helping search engines understand your content and helping people find your site. In practice, it means making sure your website clearly says what you do, where you do it and why someone should choose you, in a way both people and search engines can read.

How search works, in three steps

Google explains its process like this:

  1. Crawling. Automated programs visit pages across the web and download them. They find pages by following links and reading sitemaps.
  2. Indexing. Google reads each page and stores what it is about. Not every page gets indexed.
  3. Serving. When someone searches, Google picks the most useful pages from its index, based on many factors including the searcher's location, language and device.

SEO is the work that helps your pages through all three steps.

What SEO work usually includes

  • Writing clear page titles, descriptions and headings.
  • Making a page for each main service, written in the words your customers use.
  • Keeping your Google Business Profile complete and active.
  • Earning reviews and links from real local sources.
  • Keeping the site fast, mobile friendly and free of technical errors.

What SEO is not

  • It is not paid. Google says it does not accept payment to rank a site higher in regular results. Ads are a separate, labeled product.
  • It is not guaranteed. Google also says it does not guarantee it will crawl, index or show any page. Anyone promising a top spot is not being honest.
  • It is not instant. Changes can take weeks or months to show. See the article on how long SEO takes.

Why it matters for your business

People search for local services every day. Showing up in those unpaid results brings customers who are already looking for what you do, without paying for each click.

Common problems

  • If your site does not show up at all, it may not be indexed yet. Google Search Console shows which pages Google knows about.
  • If you show up for your business name but not your services, you likely need clearer service pages. See the article on good service pages.
  • If someone offers guaranteed rankings, see the article on first-place guarantees.
