How do AI search tools find my business?
AI answers in Google and tools like ChatGPT draw on sites they can crawl and listings like your Business Profile. Google says normal SEO is enough.
More people now get answers from AI: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode at the top of search, and chat tools such as ChatGPT that can search the web. These tools mostly find businesses the same way regular search does. They read websites they are allowed to crawl and listings such as your Google Business Profile, then summarize and link to sources.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google's guidance for site owners is direct:
- No special optimization is required. Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search.
- Your page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in regular Google Search.
- Traffic is counted in Search Console as part of your normal web search results. There is no separate AI report.
Google's suggested best practices include letting Google crawl your pages, putting important content in text, using good images and video, keeping your Business Profile and Merchant Center details accurate, and providing a good page experience.
ChatGPT and similar tools
OpenAI publishes how its crawlers work:
- OAI-SearchBot collects pages for ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI says sites that block it in their robots.txt file will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- GPTBot collects content to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
- ChatGPT-User visits a page when a person asks ChatGPT to look at it.
Other AI tools have their own crawlers and rules. If your site blocks crawlers broadly, AI tools may not be able to read it.
What helps your business show up
- Clear, factual pages that say what you do, where, and for whom.
- A complete, accurate Google Business Profile with current hours, services and photos.
- Consistent details (name, address, phone) across listings and directories.
- Reviews and mentions on trusted local sites.
- Content in text, not only inside images or videos.
- A site crawlers can reach. Check that your robots.txt file does not block search crawlers you want.
What no one can promise
AI answers change from one person and one question to the next. No one can guarantee that an AI tool will mention your business, and tools that claim to "rank you in ChatGPT" cannot control what it says.
Common problems
- If an AI tool states wrong facts about you, fix the source first: your website, your Business Profile and major listings. The tool may take time to reflect changes.
- If you are not sure whether your site blocks AI crawlers, open a request in your client portal and our team will check your robots.txt settings with you.
- If you want to keep content out of Google's AI features, Google's normal snippet controls (such as nosnippet) apply. These also limit how you appear in regular results, so ask us before using them.
