What does 410 mean?
A 410 Gone status means a page was removed on purpose and will not come back.
410 Gone means the page used to exist but has been removed permanently, and there is no new address for it. It is a more deliberate version of a 404. A website owner might use 410 for discontinued products, expired offers or content removed for legal reasons. Search engines eventually drop both 404 and 410 pages from their results. Use a redirect instead when there is a good replacement page.
Why it matters for your business: Deciding between a 410 and a redirect matters. If a similar page exists, a 301 redirect keeps the visitor and the search value; a 410 ends the trail.
What to do if you see it
- As a visitor, go to the home page or use search to look for related content.
- If you removed a page from your own site and a similar one exists, ask us to redirect it rather than leave a 410.
