What is domain renewal?
Domain renewal is paying to keep your domain registered for another term. If it is not renewed, the domain expires and can be lost.
A domain is registered for a set term, from one to ten years. Renewal extends that term. Most registrars offer auto-renew, which charges the card on file before the expiry date. If a domain is not renewed, it expires: the website and email stop working, and after a grace period and a later redemption period, which can cost more to recover from, the name can be released for anyone to register.
Why it matters for your business: An expired domain is one of the most common reasons a small-business website and email suddenly stop working. Keep auto-renew on and keep the card and contact email at your registrar current.
