What is DNS propagation?

DNS propagation is the delay between changing a DNS setting and everyone on the internet seeing the change, usually minutes to a few hours.

DNS propagation is the waiting period after a DNS change. Internet providers and devices keep saved copies of DNS answers for a while (see TTL). Until those copies expire, some people still get the old answer while others already see the new one. Most record changes spread within minutes to a few hours. Nameserver changes can take longer, sometimes up to a day or two. During this window your old and new setups may both receive visitors.

Why it matters for your business: After a website move or email change, do not panic if things look different on your phone and your computer. Give it time, and keep the old service running until the change has spread.
