What does 4xx mean?

A 4xx status code means a client error: the request could not be filled, often because the page is missing or access is not allowed.

Status codes from 400 to 499 are called client errors. The server is working, but something about the request stopped it: the address is wrong, the page no longer exists, you are not signed in, or you are not allowed to see it. The most common are 400 Bad Request, 401 Unauthorized, 403 Forbidden, 404 Not Found, 410 Gone and 429 Too Many Requests. Despite the name, the cause is often a broken link on a website rather than the visitor.

Why it matters for your business: 4xx errors on your site usually mean broken links or moved pages. Fixing them keeps visitors from hitting dead ends.

What to do if you see it

  • Check the address for typos and try again.
  • Go to the site's home page and use its menu or search to find the page.
  • If the problem is on your own website, open a request in your client portal with the page address and a screenshot, and our team will look into it.
