What does 504 mean?

A 504 Gateway Timeout error means one server waited too long for another server to answer and gave up.

504 Gateway Timeout means a gateway, such as a CDN or proxy in front of your website, passed a request to the main server and did not get an answer in time. The main server may be overloaded, a database query may be very slow, a script may be stuck, or the network between the servers may be poor. It is a timeout, so the same page may load fine on the next try if the delay was brief.

Why it matters for your business: Repeated 504s mean your server is too slow or overloaded, which frustrates visitors and can interrupt checkouts and form submissions.

What to do if you see it

  • Wait a minute and reload the page.
  • If a form or payment timed out, check your email for a confirmation before submitting again, to avoid a duplicate.
  • If it is your own website and it keeps happening, open a request with the page address and the times you saw it.
