What is a local citation?
A citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number, such as a directory or map listing.
A local citation is a listing or mention of your business details on another website. Examples include Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing, industry directories, the chamber of commerce and local news sites. Some citations are structured listings; others are mentions in an article. Search engines compare these sources to confirm your business is real and where it is.
Why it matters for your business: Consistent citations help search engines trust your details, which supports your position in local map results. Wrong or old addresses can confuse customers and search engines.
