What is a data filter in Google Analytics?

A data filter in GA4 removes certain traffic, such as visits from your own office or developers, from your reports.

GA4 data filters can exclude internal traffic, which you define by IP address, and developer traffic from testing tools. Filters are created in the property's admin settings and can be tested before turning them on. Once active, filtered data is removed permanently, so testing first matters. Universal Analytics had view filters, which worked differently and are gone.

Why it matters for your business: Filtering out your own team's visits keeps your reports focused on customers, which matters most on smaller sites where staff visits can skew numbers.
