What is a meta robots tag?
A meta robots tag is a hidden instruction in a page's code that tells search engines whether to index the page or follow its links.
A meta robots tag sits in the hidden head section of a web page. It gives search engines page-level rules, such as noindex (leave this page out of results), nofollow (do not follow the links on it) or nosnippet (do not show a text preview). The same rules can be sent another way, in a server response header called X-Robots-Tag, which also works for files like PDFs. Visitors never see these tags.
Why it matters for your business: These tags decide whether a page can show up in search. A stray noindex left over from building a site is a common reason a page never appears.
