What is a noindex tag?

A noindex tag tells search engines not to show a page in their results, even if they can reach it.

Noindex is a rule placed in a page's code (a meta robots tag) or in a server header. When a search engine sees it, it leaves that page out of search results. It is useful for pages that should not be found through search, such as thank-you pages, private landing pages or test pages. For noindex to work, the page must not be blocked in robots.txt, because the search engine has to read the page to see the tag.

Why it matters for your business: Noindex keeps low-value pages out of search. Left on an important page by accident, it makes that page invisible on Google.
