What is a negative keyword?
A negative keyword is a word or phrase you add to an ad campaign so your ad does not show for searches that contain it.
A negative keyword tells the ad platform when not to show your ad. If you sell new furnaces, you might add "jobs" and "free" as negatives so you do not pay for clicks from job seekers or bargain hunters. You can find good negatives in the search terms report, which lists the real searches that triggered your ads.
Why it matters for your business: Negative keywords cut wasted clicks, which leaves more of your budget for people who might hire you.
