What is a self-referral in Google Analytics?
A self-referral is when your own website, or a checkout or booking site you use, shows up as a referral source in your analytics.
Self-referrals happen when analytics loses track of a visit and credits your own domain, or a third-party page like a payment processor or booking tool, as where the visitor came from. That hides the real source, such as an ad or search. Fixes include tagging every page correctly, setting up cross-domain measurement for related sites, and listing unwanted referrals in your GA4 data stream settings.
Why it matters for your business: Self-referrals give credit for your sales to the wrong place. Removing them shows which marketing really brought the customer.
