What is a TXT record?

A TXT record stores a line of text in your DNS. Services use TXT records to verify you own a domain and to protect your email.

A TXT record holds plain text in your domain's DNS. Other services read that text to check facts about your domain. Google, Microsoft and many other tools ask you to add a TXT record with a unique value to prove you own the domain. Email security settings also live in TXT records, including SPF, DKIM and DMARC, which help stop scammers from sending mail that pretends to come from you.

Why it matters for your business: Verification TXT records are usually safe to add. A domain can have only one SPF record, so if a tool asks for SPF, edit the one you have; never add a second.
