What is a DNS record?
A DNS record is one line of instructions in your domain's DNS settings, such as where your website lives or where email should go.
A DNS record is a single instruction stored in your domain's DNS zone, which is the full list of settings for that domain. Each record has a type, a name (the part of the domain it applies to), a value and a TTL. Common types are A and AAAA records for websites, CNAME records for aliases, MX records for email and TXT records for verification. Together the records tell the internet where each of your services lives.
Why it matters for your business: Adding, changing or deleting one record can move your website or stop your email. Make a copy of your current records before anyone edits them.
