What is a domain registrar?

A registrar is the company you register a domain name through. It keeps your ownership record and handles renewals and transfers.

A domain registrar is a company that is allowed to sell and manage domain names for the public. When you register a domain, the registrar records you as the owner, bills you for renewals, and lets you change contact details, nameservers and transfer settings. Registrars for common extensions like .com are accredited by ICANN, the group that coordinates the domain system. Your registrar is not always your web host. Many businesses register a domain in one place and host the website somewhere else.

Why it matters for your business: Your registrar account is where control of your domain lives. Keep the login secure, turn on two-step sign-in, and keep auto-renew on so the name never lapses.
