What is FTP?
FTP is an older way to move files between your computer and a web server. Its secure version, SFTP, encrypts the connection.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method for copying files to and from a server, such as uploading website files to a host. You use an FTP client, an app that shows your files on one side and the server's files on the other. Plain FTP sends passwords without encryption, so secure versions like SFTP are preferred. Many modern websites are updated through a CMS or automated deploys instead of FTP.
Why it matters for your business: Anyone with FTP or SFTP access can change any file on your site. Keep a list of who has that access and remove it when a vendor or employee leaves.
