What is an upload?

Uploading sends a file from your device to a website or server. Downloading is the opposite: copying a file from the internet to your device.

An upload sends a file from your computer or phone to somewhere online, such as adding a photo to your website or attaching a file to a support ticket. A download does the reverse, copying a file from a website or server onto your device. Upload speeds on home and office internet are often slower than download speeds, so large uploads can take a while. Many sites limit file size or type for uploads.

Why it matters for your business: If an upload fails, check the file size and type first. Resizing a large image before uploading often fixes the problem and makes your site faster.
