What is Googlebot?

Googlebot is the program Google uses to visit and read web pages so they can appear in Google Search. Bing's version is called Bingbot.

Googlebot is Google's web crawler. It visits pages, reads their content and follows links, and it does this mostly as a smartphone browser would. Bing has its own crawler called Bingbot, and other search engines and AI companies run their own bots too. You can see Googlebot's activity in Google Search Console, and you can guide where bots go with a robots.txt file.

Why it matters for your business: If you see visits from Googlebot in your site logs or reports, that is normal and good. Blocking it by mistake would remove your site from Google.
