How often should I publish a blog post?
There is no magic schedule, and Google does not reward posting more for its own sake. Publish genuinely useful posts at a pace you can keep.
There is no number of posts per month that Google rewards. Google's guidance on helpful content warns against adding lots of new content only because you think it will help rankings, and against changing dates on old pages to make them look fresh. What helps is content that answers real questions from your customers, written by someone who knows the subject.
A pace that works for most small businesses
- Pick a pace you can keep, whether that is once a week, once a month or once a quarter. A blog that stops after three posts looks abandoned.
- Answer real questions. Your phone calls, emails and reviews are full of topics: "How much does X usually involve?", "How do I know if I need Y?"
- Show first-hand experience. Google's guidance favors content that shows real expertise, such as a job you did, a before-and-after, or a lesson you learned.
- Update good old posts when facts change, instead of writing new ones on the same topic.
Signs a post is written for search engines instead of people
Google lists warning signs like these:
- Writing about a topic only because it is trending, not because your customers care.
- Writing to hit a word count. Google says it has no preferred length.
- Covering topics far outside your expertise only to get traffic.
- Summarizing what others wrote without adding anything new.
What you need
- A list of customer questions.
- About an hour or two per post, plus photos from your own work if you have them.
We can publish it for you. Open a request in your client portal with your draft or your topic ideas, and our team will handle formatting and publishing.
Common problems
- If posts get no visits, check whether anyone searches for that topic and whether the title says clearly what the post answers.
- If you run out of ideas, ask staff for the three questions they answer most each week.
- If you are tempted to post AI-written articles in bulk, see the article on using AI for website content first.
