What should go on my homepage?
Say in a few seconds what you do, where and how to reach you, then point visitors to your main services and proof you are trusted.
A visitor should know within a few seconds what you do, where you do it and how to reach you. After that, your homepage's job is to send each visitor to the right service page and give them reasons to trust you.
A simple homepage checklist
- A clear headline that names what you do and where. "Family dental care in Springfield" beats "Welcome to our website".
- One main action, such as Call, Book or Get a quote, visible without scrolling. See the article on calls to action.
- Your main services, each linking to its own page.
- Proof: a few short reviews, years in business, licenses, photos of your real work or team.
- Where you work: your address, or the towns you serve if you travel to customers.
- How to reach you: phone number, contact form and hours. Make the phone number tap-to-call on mobile.
- Real photos of your business, work or team where you can.
Search basics for the homepage
- Title: your main service, your area and your business name. Google recommends saving the fuller branding for the homepage.
- One main heading that matches what the page is about.
- Text, not only images. Search engines read text. Put important words in text, not only inside pictures.
- Links to service pages, so both visitors and Google can find them. Google notes every important page should be linked from at least one other page.
What to leave out
- Long welcome paragraphs that say little.
- Sliders full of messages that rotate before anyone can read them.
- Every detail about every service. That belongs on the service pages.
We can help. Open a request in your client portal if you want your homepage reviewed or rewritten.
Common problems
- If visitors leave quickly, check that the top of the page says what you do and where in plain words.
- If calls are low but visits are high, make the phone number and main button easier to find on mobile.
- If your homepage ranks but your services do not, your service pages may need more detail. See the related article.
