What are tints, tones and shades?
Tints, tones and shades are lighter, grayer and darker versions of one color, made by adding white, gray or black.
A tint is a color with white added, so it gets lighter and softer, like pink from red. A shade is a color with black added, so it gets darker, like maroon from red. A tone is a color with gray added, which makes it more muted. Designers use tints, tones and shades of brand colors to create backgrounds, borders and hover effects that still feel on brand.
Why it matters for your business: Variations of your main colors give your website and print pieces more range without adding new colors that dilute your brand.
