What does 2xx mean?

A 2xx status code means success. The most common, 200 OK, means the server found the page and sent it normally.

Status codes from 200 to 299 mean the request worked. The one you meet most is 200 OK: the page exists and was delivered. Others in this group include 201 Created, used when something new was saved, such as a form entry, and 204 No Content, used when an action succeeded with nothing to show. Visitors never see these codes on screen, but site checkers and search tools report them.

Why it matters for your business: Every important page on your site should return 200. A page that shows an error message but still returns 200 confuses search engines, which may treat it as a real page.

What to do if you see it

  • Nothing, if the page looks right. A 2xx code means the request worked.
  • If a site checker shows 200 for a page that displays "not found," note the address and ask us to check it, since search engines may index that error page.
