What does 3xx mean?

A 3xx status code means redirection: the page you asked for lives somewhere else, and the browser is sent to the new address.

Status codes from 300 to 399 mean the content has moved and the browser should look elsewhere. Browsers follow these redirects on their own, so visitors usually land on the right page without noticing. The most common are 301 (moved permanently), 302 (found, a temporary move), 307 (temporary) and 308 (permanent). Another, 304 Not Modified, tells the browser its saved copy is still current, which speeds up loading.

Why it matters for your business: Redirects keep old links and search rankings working after pages move. Long chains of redirects, or loops, slow pages down or break them.

What to do if you see it

  • Nothing, if you end up on the right page. Redirects are normal.
  • If you end up on the wrong page or the home page instead of the one you wanted, note the link you clicked and tell us.
  • If the browser says the page redirected too many times, see the article on that error.
