What does too many redirects mean?

\"Too many redirects\" means a page keeps sending the browser around in a loop, so the browser stops trying.

This error, shown in Chrome as ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS and in other browsers with similar wording, means the browser was sent from one address to another so many times that it gave up. Usually two settings point at each other, for example one rule forcing https and another forcing it back, or the www and bare-domain versions redirecting to each other. Old cookies can also cause a loop after a site's settings change.

Why it matters for your business: A redirect loop makes the page, and often the whole site, impossible to open. It often appears right after a domain, SSL or hosting change.

What to do if you see it

  • Clear the cookies for that site, or open it in a private window.
  • Try another browser or device.
  • If it is your own website, open a request in your client portal and mention any recent domain, SSL or hosting changes.
