What is a redirect?

A redirect automatically sends visitors and search engines from one URL to another, such as from an old page to its new address.

A redirect is an instruction on your site that forwards anyone who visits one address to a different one. It is used when a page moves, when two pages are merged, when a site changes domains, and to send http:// to https:// or the www version to the bare domain. A permanent redirect uses the 301 code. A temporary one uses 302. Too many redirects in a row, or two pointing at each other, cause errors.

Why it matters for your business: Redirects protect the search rankings and links your old pages earned. Without them, moved pages turn into 404 errors.
