What does \"Your connection is not private\" mean?

This browser warning means the site's security certificate could not be trusted, so the browser stopped before loading the page.

Browsers show "Your connection is not private" (or a similar warning) when the site's SSL certificate fails a check. In Chrome it often comes with a code starting with NET::ERR_CERT. Causes include an expired certificate, a certificate issued for a different domain, a missing certificate for the www or bare version, a wrong date or time on your device, or a public Wi-Fi network that intercepts the connection.

Why it matters for your business: Most visitors leave when they see this warning, and they should not enter details on that page. On your own site, it usually means the certificate needs renewing or fixing.

What to do if you see it

  • Check that your device's date and time are correct.
  • If you are on public Wi-Fi, try mobile data or another network.
  • Do not click past the warning to enter passwords or payment details.
  • If it is your own website, open a request in your client portal with the exact address and a screenshot of the warning.
