What is HTTPS?

HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP, the language browsers and websites use to talk. It encrypts everything sent between them.

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is the set of rules browsers and servers use to request and send web pages. HTTPS is the secure version: the S stands for secure. It wraps the connection in encryption using an SSL/TLS certificate, so passwords, form entries and payment details cannot be read or changed along the way. You can tell a site uses HTTPS when its address starts with https:// and the browser shows a padlock.

Why it matters for your business: Browsers label plain HTTP pages "not secure," and search engines favor HTTPS. Every page of your site should load over HTTPS.
