What is a breakpoint?

A breakpoint is a screen width where a responsive website changes its layout, such as switching from three columns to one.

In responsive design, a breakpoint is a width at which the layout adjusts. Below one breakpoint the site might show a phone layout, and above it a tablet or desktop layout. Designers pick breakpoints where the content starts to look cramped or stretched, not for one specific device. When you review a site, checking it at several widths shows whether each breakpoint works.

Why it matters for your business: Checking your site on a phone, a tablet and a computer catches layout problems that only appear at certain screen sizes.
