What is a layout grid?

A layout grid is an invisible set of columns and spacing rules that designers use to line up content consistently across pages.

A layout grid divides a page into columns with consistent gaps, called gutters, and margins. Text, images and buttons snap to these columns, so pages look orderly and related. On websites, the grid usually changes with screen size: perhaps 12 columns on a desktop, fewer on a tablet and one on a phone. Visitors never see the grid, but they feel its effect in a tidy, predictable layout.

Why it matters for your business: A consistent grid keeps your pages looking like one well-built site, even as new pages are added over time.
