What is a JPG file?

A JPG (or JPEG) is the most common photo format, keeping files small by discarding detail your eye is unlikely to notice.

JPG, also written JPEG, is a raster format designed for photographs. It uses lossy compression, which means it throws away some detail to make the file much smaller. At sensible settings the difference is hard to see. JPG does not support transparent backgrounds, and every time you edit and re-save a JPG it can lose a little more quality. For logos and graphics with sharp text, PNG or SVG usually look cleaner.

Why it matters for your business: Properly sized JPG or WebP photos keep your pages fast, which matters to visitors and to search engines.
