What is a mention on social media?

A mention is when a post or comment includes an account's handle, which notifies that account and links to it.

A mention, also called a tag, happens when someone types an @ followed by an account's handle in a post, comment or story. The mentioned account usually gets a notification, and the handle becomes a link to their profile. You can mention customers, partners or suppliers, and they can mention you. Many platforms let you control who can tag or mention you.

Why it matters for your business: Mentions spread word of mouth online. Responding when customers mention you shows you are listening and can bring their friends to your page.
