What is a ping?

A ping is a quick test that sends a tiny message to a server and times how long the reply takes, to check if it is reachable.

A ping is a simple network test. Your computer sends a small message to another computer, such as a web server, and waits for a reply. The time it takes, measured in milliseconds, shows how fast the connection is, and no reply can mean the server is down or blocking pings. People also say "ping" casually to mean a quick message. Some servers block pings on purpose, so no reply does not always mean a problem.

Why it matters for your business: Support teams may use a ping to check whether a slow site is caused by the server or by the network in between.
