What is an IP address?
An IP address is the number that identifies a device or server on the internet. DNS turns your domain name into one.
An IP address (internet protocol address) is a unique number given to every device and server on a network. It works like a street address so data knows where to go. There are two kinds: IPv4, written as four numbers like 192.0.2.10, and IPv6, a longer mix of letters and numbers. Your website's server has an IP address, and DNS A and AAAA records point your domain to it.
Why it matters for your business: Hosts sometimes ask for your server's IP address, and security tools sometimes block an IP. Knowing what it is helps you follow those instructions.
