What is a QR code quiet zone?

The quiet zone is the blank margin around a QR code that scanners need to find the code's edges.

A QR code's quiet zone is the empty border around it. It must be free of text, images and patterns so a phone can tell where the code starts. The QR code standard calls for a margin about four modules wide, where a module is one of the small squares in the code. Designs that crowd a QR code against a busy background or a frame edge often fail to scan.

Why it matters for your business: Leaving a clean border around your QR code is one of the simplest ways to make sure customers can scan it.
