What is a screen reader?
A screen reader is software that reads a screen aloud or sends it to a braille display, used mainly by people who are blind or have low vision.
A screen reader turns what is on a screen into speech or braille. Common ones include VoiceOver on Apple devices, TalkBack on Android and free and paid options on Windows. Users move through headings, links, buttons and form fields with keys or gestures. A screen reader can only describe what the page's code provides, so missing alt text, unlabeled buttons and messy headings make a site confusing.
Why it matters for your business: Testing your site with a screen reader for a few minutes shows how well it works for blind and low-vision customers.
