What is a sitemap?

A sitemap is a file that lists the pages on your website so search engines can find them sooner.

An XML sitemap is a file, usually at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, that lists the pages you want search engines to know about. It can also note when each page last changed, and separate sitemaps can list images or videos. A sitemap does not guarantee a page will be indexed, but it helps search engines discover pages faster. You can submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Some sites also have a visible sitemap page for visitors.

Why it matters for your business: A sitemap helps new and updated pages get found sooner, which matters most for new sites and sites with pages that few other pages link to.
