What is a typeface?
A typeface is a family of lettering with one shared design, while a font is one specific style within it, like bold or italic.
A typeface is the overall design of a set of letters, numbers and symbols, such as Helvetica or Garamond. A font, strictly speaking, is one member of that family, like Garamond Bold Italic. In everyday use, people say "font" for both, and that is fine. Most brands choose one or two typefaces, for example one for headings and one for body text.
Why it matters for your business: Picking a small set of typefaces and sticking with them keeps your website and printed materials consistent.
