What is an EPP code?

An EPP code, also called an auth code or transfer code, is a secret code from your current registrar that lets you move a domain to another registrar.

An EPP code is a password for moving a domain. It is also called an authorization code, auth code or transfer key. You get it from your current registrar, then enter it at the registrar that will receive the domain. The domain must also be unlocked. Registrars may refuse a transfer within 60 days of a domain being registered or last transferred. EPP stands for Extensible Provisioning Protocol, the system registrars use to talk to each other.

Why it matters for your business: Anyone with the code and an unlocked domain can start moving it away from you. Treat it like a password: enter it only at the receiving registrar's transfer screen, and never paste it into email or chat.
