What is an SRV record?

An SRV record tells apps which server and port to use for a specific service, such as a phone system or chat tool, on your domain.

An SRV record (service) points a named service on your domain to a specific server and port number. Port numbers are like apartment numbers on a server, sending traffic to the right program. Some phone systems, video and chat tools, and sign-in services use SRV records so devices can find them on their own. Most small-business websites never need one. You add an SRV record only when a provider tells you to, with the values it gives you.

Why it matters for your business: If a business phone or app setup guide lists SRV records and they are missing, devices may fail to connect even though everything else looks fine.
