What is back-end development?

The back end is the behind-the-scenes part of a website: servers, databases and logic. Back-end development builds and runs it.

The back end is the part of a website or app that visitors do not see. It runs on servers and handles data and logic: saving form entries, processing orders and payments, managing user accounts, sending emails and talking to other services through APIs. Back-end development is the work of building and maintaining it, often with languages such as PHP, JavaScript (Node.js), Python or Ruby, plus a database.

Why it matters for your business: When a form stops sending or an order does not record, the problem is usually in the back end, even if the page looks fine.
