What is a database?

A database is an organized store of information, like customers, orders or page content, that a website or app reads and updates.

A database is a structured collection of data that software can search, read and change quickly. Websites use databases to hold things like page content, products, orders, customer accounts, bookings and form submissions. The data is usually arranged in tables, a bit like spreadsheets that link to each other. Databases need backups and access controls, because they often hold your most valuable business information.

Why it matters for your business: Your customer and order data is a business asset. Know where it is stored, who can reach it, and how it is backed up.
