What does 503 mean?

A 503 Service Unavailable error means the server cannot handle the request right now, usually because of maintenance or overload.

503 Service Unavailable means the server is up but temporarily cannot serve pages. It is often planned, such as during maintenance or an update, and sometimes unplanned, when too many visitors or bots arrive at once and the server runs out of capacity. A 503 can include a note telling browsers and search engines when to try again. It is meant to be short-lived.

Why it matters for your business: Search engines treat a short 503 as a pause, which protects your rankings during maintenance. A 503 that lasts for days starts to look like a site that is gone.

What to do if you see it

  • Wait a few minutes and try again.
  • If you know your site is being updated, check back after the work window.
  • If it is your own website and it lasts, open a request with the time it started.
