What is an email bounce?

A bounce is an email that could not be delivered and was returned to the sender with an error message.

An email bounces when the receiving server cannot or will not accept it. The sender gets an automatic reply, often called a bounce message or non-delivery report, that includes an error code and a reason. Bounces come in two main kinds: hard bounces, which are permanent, and soft bounces, which are temporary. Email marketing tools track your bounce rate for each send.

Why it matters for your business: Bounces mean customers did not get your message, and a high bounce rate can hurt delivery of all your other mail.
