What is a nameserver?
A nameserver is a server that stores your domain's DNS records and answers lookups. Your registrar settings decide which nameservers are in charge.
A nameserver is a server that holds the DNS records for a domain and answers questions about them, such as "where is the website for this name?" Nameservers usually come in sets of two or more with names like ns1.example.net and ns2.example.net. You choose them at your registrar. Whichever company runs those nameservers is your DNS host, and that is the only place where record changes take effect.
Why it matters for your business: Knowing who runs your nameservers tells you where your DNS really lives. Edits at any other company do nothing, which is a common cause of "I changed it and nothing happened."
