What is compression?
Compression makes files smaller so they load faster. It applies to images, code and whole pages sent from the server.
Compression shrinks the size of files. On websites it happens in two main places. Images are compressed by saving them in efficient formats like WebP at a sensible size and quality. Text files, such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, are compressed by the server with methods like gzip or Brotli before being sent, then unpacked by the browser. Smaller files travel faster, so pages load quicker and use less data.
Why it matters for your business: Uploading huge photos straight from a camera or phone is one of the most common causes of slow small-business websites.
