What is source code?
Source code is the human-readable instructions developers write to build a website or app, in languages like HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Source code, often called code, is the set of written instructions that make up a website or app. Developers write it in programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript or PHP. A browser or server reads the code and turns it into the pages and features people use. Code is usually stored in a repository with version history. Who owns and can access the code is often set out in your contract.
Why it matters for your business: Owning or having access to your site's code means you can move to another developer or host without starting over.
