What is the rule of thirds?
The rule of thirds is a layout guideline that places key subjects along lines that split a frame into thirds, for a more natural look.
Imagine a photo or layout divided by two horizontal and two vertical lines into nine equal boxes. The rule of thirds suggests placing the main subject along those lines or where they cross, instead of dead center. This tends to feel more natural and leaves room for text, such as a headline beside a person in a hero image. It is a guideline, not a law.
Why it matters for your business: Photos composed with the rule of thirds crop well and leave room for headlines on your website and social posts.
